THE NEW CALIFORNIA TITLE 24 ENERGY RESTRICTIONS
A SIMPLIFIED SUMMARY

 What are the current California Title 24 requirements?

Under current Title 24 requirements**, newly installed lighting for commercial office & many other non-residential spaces must not use more than 1.2 watts of electricity per square foot.

Current regulations also suggest a voluntary limit of 1.2 watts per square foot for ambient (overall room lighting), with 0.2 watts of that set aside for task lighting (either built-in or portable).

Under the forthcoming regulations, the current voluntary energy restriction levels will become mandatory, meaning that:

New lighting in commercial open office areas and many other non-residential spaces will be limited to a total of 1.2 watts per square foot, including a mandatory set-aside of 0.2 watts for task lighting – whether you have it or not.  This means ambient lighting will not be allowed to use more than 1 watt of electricity per square foot.

 When will this new limit become effective?

The new limits go into effect on October 1, 2005.
